Dear respected monks and nuns, Dhamma brothers and sisters,
In Theravada Buddhist tradition, Magha Puja Day, also referred to as Sangha Day or Fourfold Assembly Day, holds significance as it commemorates four special events that coincided on a single day during the Dhamma propagation in the life of Gautama Buddha.
- 1,250 disciples came to see the Buddha that evening without being summoned.
- All of them were fully enlightened Arahants.
- All had been ordained by the Buddha himself, and therefore were his direct spiritual descendants.
- It was the full-moon day.
On this occasion, the Buddha imparted a summary of Buddhism to those arahants, known as the Ovādapātimokkha: “To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one’s mind.”
This year, the Sakyamuni Buddhist Meditation Center will celebrate Magha Puja Day on Sunday, February 25, 2024, and hold the Dhutanga Night to commemorate this important event.
The Dhutanga Night will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2024, and conclude by 5 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
During the Dhutanga Night, the Most Venerable Khippapanno Kim Trieu will give the Dhutanga precept.
The purpose of the Dhutanga Night is to commemorate and honor the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha. The event will include various activities such as sitting meditation, chanting, walking meditation, Dharma talk, candle lighting, and more.
May the merits be dedicated to the peace and happiness of all sentient beings.
We eagerly anticipate your presence at these auspicious events!
With metta,
Sakyamuni Buddhist Meditation Association
